In August 27 & 28, 2022, TELIYA International Society hosted the 2022 Yukon African Music Festival at the MacBride Museum, Whitehorse and the Watson Lake Recreation Centre, Watson Lake. The events had live music, presentations, workshops, DJ Music Demo, Kids arts & crafts, drumming, and dancing. It was an experience catered for the whole family.
The performances were lead by Jessica Mbangeni from South Africa, as well as N’nato (Guinea/Vancouver), Brian Quaye – Orison and the Band (Ghana/Calgary), Grammy Award Winner Maju Maru Dladla (South Africa/Vancouver), and Jenny Fröhling & Dennis Shorty.
Others were Momo Solo (Ivory Coast/Montreal), Dophine Mbuyi (Congo/Montreal), Leonard Boniface, Craig & group (drumming), Michael Oliphat, KG Dance Group, and Roxx Hunter & Rick Sward’s Band.
It was an incredible moment of being immersed into the creative and artistic element, as well as an opportunity of coming together beyond racial boundaries.
